English Developmental Continuum P-10 and ESL Students

The English Continuum has been developed for students who have been learning English as their first language, or have strong oral bilingual skills in their home language and English. Students who are at early stages of learning English as a second or additional language will not have sufficient knowledge of English for the Continuum to support planning programs. The dimensions in the ESL Companion to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards give appropriate information for teachers to support students who are learning English as a second or additional language. See: English as a Second Language (ESL) Companion to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards

The ESL Developmental Continuum P–10 provides indicators of progress for each Stage and dimension of the ESL Standards, to support the assessment of students who are learning English as a second language. Teaching strategies are also provided to assist teachers in the development of effective learning programs for their ESL students.

As ESL students' English knowledge, skills and behaviours continue to develop, their learning will begin to correspond more and more to the progress outlined in this Continuum.
