The Key Characteristics of Effective Literacy Teaching P-6 (PDF - 1.2Mb) – Specifies the nature of quality differentiated classroom teaching for all students in Years Prep to 6.  These characteristics were informed by research and developed through consultation with classroom practitioners, literacy experts, and regional personnel.  This document links to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and relevant online literacy learning and teaching resources.

English Online Interview

English Online Interview – assesses student against all dimensions of English VELS (reading, writing and speaking and listening) and provides comprehensive information about student achievement.

Reading Difficulties and Dyslexia

Reading Difficulties and Dyslexia is for primary and secondary teachers to build their knowledge and understanding of reading difficulties and dyslexia. This resource provides practical assessments that can be used to identify the nature of a student’s reading difficulty and focused teaching strategies that can be used to support the development of a student’s knowledge and skills in reading.

Continuum

English Developmental Continuum P-10 contains evidence-based indicators of progress, linked to powerful teaching strategies, aligned to the progression points and the standards for the English domain of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards.

The ESL Developmental Continuum P-10 provides indicators of progress for each Stage and dimension of the ESL Standards, to support the assessment of students who are learning English as a second language. Teaching strategies are also provided to assist teachers in the development of effective learning programs for their ESL students.

Reading training videos

Reading training videos support teachers and school leaders in their understanding and use of the Continuum, to differentiate teaching by identifying what students are able to do, and planning for purposeful learning and teaching in reading.

Literacy Professional Learning Resource

The Literacy Professional Learning Resource is for all classroom teachers to deepen their understanding of literacy.  This will inform their planning for literacy learning and assessment for all domains of the VELS.  It will also assist literacy leaders in schools to plan opportunities for professional learning for the whole staff, in professional learning teams and/or for individual teachers.
