Principles of Learning and Teaching – Case Studies
Geelong Gardens Cluster - A Positive Experience
"An extremely positive experience!" reported Helen Hatsis, Educator for the Geelong Gardens Cluster, when asked about the cluster's participation in the pilot of the Principles of Learning and Teaching P-12 initiative.
The Geelong Gardens Cluster, comprising, Geelong High School, Geelong South Primary School, Moolap Primary School and Tate Street Primary School Geelong, was nominated by Barwon South West Region to participate in this pilot along with six other clusters from across Victoria. The Principles of Learning and Teaching P-12 initiative is described under Student Learning, the first of the seven strategies which form the Blueprint for Government Schools.
Helen was enthusiastic about the six Principles of Learning and Teaching which she feels are succinct and reflect good teaching practice. She states:
The teachers involved found Component Mapping process highly valuable and allowed them to reflect on their teaching practice - something that they had not done in the past. The professional discussions that have arisen from the process have been terrific - in fact, the Component Mapping is the best thing we have done for a long time!
The development of an action plan has provided the cluster with a clear direction for the future and the schools have already completed some of the planned actions. "The Principles of Learning and Teaching have provided a focus for the work of the cluster. I highly recommend the initiative to all schools."
