Nominating a gifted student

Rating scales and checklists of known characteristics and behaviours can be important tools in the identification of gifted and high potential students. The use of rating scales and checklists to accompany a nomination form ensures your child is judged on the characteristics and behaviours seen in gifted populations. The inclusion of such items considerably improves the validity of teacher and peer nominations by limiting potentially subjective biases.

The ability of parents to nominate their child as a gifted student is particularly under utilised, even though research has consistently shown the accuracy of parent identification, particularly in the identification of younger students.

Some tools you can use to identify your child as gifted and high potential include:

  • VELS scores and student work products such as folios
  • anecdotal records
  • IQ testing
  • teacher checklist

The following checklists also provide you with a process to identify any gifted characteristics in your child:
