Schools may also use the allocated funding to purchase directly from a supplier on a weekly basis and account for such expenditure in accordance with current Departmental financial policy and audit requirements. Details will be provided directly to schools.

Schools may wish to consider entering into a trial period with their provider before entering into long term contracts.

Food handling and preparation

The individual arrangements that schools may make with suppliers will determine the extent to which schools will be involved with storing, handling and distributing their fresh fruit and vegetables. Regardless, schools must ensure the fruit and vegetables they provide to students are stored, prepared and distributed in a safe and hygienic way.

Health Canteen Kit – Food safety – provides advice on the safe preparation and handling of food. Advice about the safe preparation and handling of food is also provided in Section 4.4.6.11 Food Safety in schools and food handling regulations in the Victorian Government Schools Reference Guide (PDF - 720Kb)
