The material provides information for developing appropriate programs. It contains student descriptions, suggested course content and examples of units of work.

ESL Stage A1 – Teacher support materials for lower primary new arrivals covers primary ESL students in Years P–2, who are new to learning English and new to school in Australia. It is designed for ESL and classroom teachers in both specialist ESL teaching contexts and in mainstream classrooms. It provides advice on the teaching of English and on developing appropriate programs for these students.

This material from the Curriculum@work CD-ROM covers Stages A2, B2 and B3 of the ESL Companion and includes a revised version of previously published ESL Course Advice.

It provides information to assist mainstream classroom teachers and ESL specialists to develop and provide appropriate programs for their ESL learners who are beyond the beginning stages of learning English. It also contains units of work that introduce ESL students to new technologies.

No English – Don't panic provides information and strategies for primary classroom teachers of newly arrived ESL students during their first few weeks in Australia. It provides early English language learning needs – including information about enrolment and placement – helping students settle into their new school.

The book seeks to show that the arrival in a school of a student new to English should be viewed as the start of a positive and rewarding time for both teacher and student.

No English 2 – Questions and Answers is a follow-on book from No English – Don't panic. It provides answers to some of the questions primary classroom teachers may have about the English language development of newly arrived ESL learners, and about providing appropriate programs for them.

It shows how a coordinated program can be developed by using available school resources, which will be appropriate for students and manageable for teachers.

Beginning ESL – Support material for primary new arrivals

Beginning ESL – Support material for primary new arrivals supports mainstream primary classroom teachers by providing practical ideas and resources for newly arrived ESL learners. The material is organised into 16 units of work based around topics that are appropriate for newly arrived students.

The activities and worksheets are designed to encourage communication and interaction between the new student, the teacher and other students in the class. Each unit contains:

  • learning outcomes for the topic and for English learning
  • lists of vocabulary and grammar features
  • worksheets which may be photocopied
  • additional references and lists of resources.

ESL Students in the Early Years – A multimedia resource for teachers of ESL students in the early years (P–2), CD-ROM

The ESL Students in the Early Years CD-ROM assists teachers to meet the specific learning needs of ESL students in the early years of schooling. The focus is on the reading program in Years Prep–2.

Information and advice is organised under the components of the Early Years Literacy Program: Teaching Readers; Teaching strategies; Additional assistance; and Parent participation.

The CD-ROM provides teachers and coordinators with:

  • information and support for professional development activities for curriculum coordinators and teachers of ESL learners in the early years
  • practical classroom-based considerations to specifically support ESL learners
  • pathways for ESL students within Teaching Readers in the Early Years.

First Language Assessment Materials

First Language Assessment Materials help to assess students' reading and writing skills in the languages of Arabic, Khmer, Somali, Turkish and Vietnamese. It comprises sets of photocopiable assessment tasks and recording sheets.

The tasks were designed for newly arrived students entering Australian schools at the upper primary and secondary levels. Some of the early tasks may provide useful information about younger students.

It is envisaged that the tasks will be most useful with students who have had little or no schooling in their first language.

Where's English?

Where's English? is a multimedia resource to develop the English language skills of students at the beginning stages of learning English as a second language.

It has been designed around the animated story of a 14 year-old girl, Anna, who has lost her pet blue-tongue lizard named English. The lizard leads Anna and her friend Lee on a search that takes place in the town of Bayside. They interact with family members, school friends and adults living and working in the town.

Language games for ESL students – Classroom activities for students learning English as a second language (2004)

These photocopiable materials can be used to make language games for English as a second language (ESL) and language other than English (LOTE) students, across all year levels. The games consolidate and reinforce skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and give students a chance to use a range of language functions important for working and playing with others.

Game packs can be prepared so that the games are readily accessible to teachers and students. Many suggestions on how to play a range of games are provided. The games are based 19 topics that are usually taught to newly arrived ESL students including: Actions, Animals, Beach, Body, Clothes, Food, Plants and gardens, School, Transport and Weekend activities.

Word study for new arrivals – Practical word-study materials for teachers of primary and secondary ESL students beginning their English language learning

These materials are designed to assist ESL students to develop early literacy skills in English through a focus on the vocabulary and grammatical features which early learners of English are most likely to use.

The materials provide a range of word study activities that can be selected from and adapted to meet individual class and student needs. The vocabulary and grammatical features in this kit have been chosen for their appropriateness to ESL learners in the early stages. It is anticipated that teachers will add to and adapt the content according to the needs of their students.
