Support for refugees – Transition support for refugee students
Students go through numerous transition points upon arrival in a new country. A coordinated transition into a new educational setting, accompanied by a well-planned orientation program, will assist refugee students in making a successful start.
English learning schools and centres (ELS/ELCs) – Transition coordinators at your local English learning schools and centres (ELS/ELCs) are available to help support transition from ELS/ELCs to government schools.
Planning Bridging programs (Word - 324Kb) and targeted support can assist with the transition to mainstream school.
Connect (www.miceastmelb.com.au/connect.htm) – developed by the Migrant Information Centre, and similar peer and mentor programs should be considered.
School's in for refugees (www.survivorsvic.org.au/publications.php) – Section 7.2 includes transition guidelines which recommend support such as orientation visits and buddy programs.
