Professional Learning opportunities are organised in each region by the ESL Regional Program Officers.

Programs include:

  • Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms, language in learning across the curriculum
  • Designing effective ESL programs - Primary and Students with disrupted schooling.

Monthly EAL Matters - May 2012

These professional learning sessions use DEECD’s Virtual Conference Centre facility and are scheduled during the last week of each month.

Title: iPads and Netbook Trial for English as an additional language The Department has a trial with eight different English Language Schools/Centres where newly arrived students are provided with a wireless Netbook or iPad for a period of six months.

Guests:  Sarah Dalton of Hume English Language Centre and Katherine Roberts of Geelong English Language Centre will share their experiences. Elizabeth Pearce and Janice Youl of DEECD Central Office and Ian Stevens, independent evaluator, will share an update of evaluation and some of the interim learnings.

Who: ESL teachers and mainstream teachers are encouraged to attend for all or part of the session.

When: Wednesday 30th May at 4-5pm.

Where and how: you just need a computer with a headset and latest Java program installed. The room is not open until an hour before the session starts and it is a good idea to sign in before 4pm and check that the technology works.

Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms – Language in learning across the curriculum

Teaching ESL students in mainstream classrooms – Language in learning across the curriculum is an innovative professional development program for all teachers working with ESL students.

Nine weekly modules are presented by a trained tutor. The course materials present strategies and discuss issues, supported by readings, which consistently address the fundamental relationship between language and learning. The program promotes an holistic approach to teaching that will ensure students are successful learners.
