Changing settlement patterns have seen newly arrived students – from language backgrounds other than English – enrolling in schools not normally accustomed to catering to such students. An outreach services coordinator has been placed in each of the four metropolitan English language schools to provide services to schools within their regions.
Outreach services coordinators, in cooperation with schools, are available to assist teachers to assess the English language learning needs of newly arrived students. They recommend the most suitable support program available, such as attendance at an ELS/ELC, Outposting or visiting Outposting program.
In cases where these options are not appropriate, Outreach services coordinators:
Principals can obtain the assistance of an Outreach services coordinator when newly arrived students present for enrolment and are unable to access existing new arrival services.

Based on centrally collected data, schools may be contacted by the Outreach services coordinators. They will arrange a suitable time to assist teachers in assessing the English language learning needs of their students and to recommend appropriate ESL programs.
