Two Outposting programs exist to cater to students who are unable to attend an ELS/ELC because of a range of factors, including distance.
Through the intensive Outposting program, primary teachers from an ELS/ELC are assigned to a mainstream primary school, or a cluster of schools. These teachers provide an intensive New Arrivals Program for eligible newly arrived students for whom English is a second language.
The intensive Outposting program is provided for students who are unable to attend a program at an ELS/ELC because of a range of factors, including distance.
Students are grouped according to their stage of schooling and English language needs. They receive an intensive English language program for up to four days a week. The students remain enrolled in their host school and participate in its program when not in the intensive ESL class.
The program operates in the four metropolitan regions and is overseen by a cross-regional committee convened by the ESL Unit.
New arrivals support is provided to primary students in outer metropolitan areas through a visiting Outposting program. The program is based on a visiting teacher model using qualified ESL teaching staff who are attached to ELS/ELCs.
