ESL Assessment and Reporting

Assessment

The ESL Companion to VELS (the ESL Standards) should be used to assess the English language learning progress of ESL students. See the ESL Companion to the VELS (http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/support/esl/esl.html)

The ESL Developmental Continuum provides indicators of progress for each Stage and dimension of the ESL Standards, to support teachers in making judgements about their ESL students' English language learning.

Reporting

In general, the progress of ESL students in learning English should be reported against the stages of the ESL standards included in the ESL Companion to the VELS (http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/support/esl/esl.html), rather than the levels of the English standards.

For frequently asked questions about reporting the progress of ESL students to their parents, across all domains, see: Student Reports - Reporting the Achievement of Students for whom English is a Second Language.

For sample ESL reports see: Student Reports - Sample Report Cards.
