In 2001, Associate Professor Lorna Earl gave the keynote address at the 2001 ASPA National Conference ‘Public Education: Right, Responsibility’,
In her keynote, entitled Leading schools in a data-rich world, Associate Professor Earl said: ‘Wisdom will come from pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zone’.
Following are other extracts from the keynote:
Principals and teachers just need to learn how to use data to their advantage. If you know how to use it and what to look for, you can paint your own picture and pass it onto your audience.
Using data is not a mechanistic process. It is more observation skills, imagination, visioning, deciding what to do and how to do it. In other words, it is more like what an artist does.
This paper can be used to create a discussion about the importance of data for planning and monitoring.
