Prep to Year 10 Assessment – Assessment Professional Learning Modules

Module 5 facilitator notes

Overall advice for Module 5

This module is the final component of the professional learning modules and rounds out the professional learning process. It focuses on how to ensure that assessments are accurate, appropriate and fair (i.e. valid) and consistent and reproducible (i.e. reliable). It also provides support for developing a consistency protocol to ensure this happens. It concludes with building an assessment plan to embed the learnings from the series of modules into everyday teaching.

The Table, below, indicates where this module links in with the other Student Learning initiatives and the core concepts that it explores.

The Outcomes are at the heart of this module. These are the ideas that you need to keep front and centre as you work through the activities with your colleagues, always connecting back to improving student learning.

After completing Module 5 teachers will be able to:

  • understand that valid assessment is accurate, appropriate and fair
  • understand that consistent assessment is reproducible and therefore reliable
  • make more valid and consistent judgements when planning and conducting assessment
  • establish processes, such as using assessment maps, moderation and consistency protocols, to build greater consistency in their judgements on students' learning
  • develop an assessment plan that embeds ideas developed in all five modules into their context
  • plan and implement some classroom-based actions following this module.
