Career Resources for Rural and Remote Young People

Education Foundation - an independent, not-for-profit organisation that supports young Australians by funding and facilitating innovation in public schools. It includes the City Centre (http://www.thecitycentre.org.au/) which provides opportunities for students to connect with all aspects of Melbourne's diverse community in a learning activity. In the weeks prior to The City Centre visit, students work with their teachers in developing the area of investigation they wish to explore. Following the week in the city, students analyse the data, test it against their hypothesis and make presentations to the wider school community.

Youth Central - including sections on Studying and training, Managing money, Travel and transport, Housing and accommodation, Jobs and careers.

Growing Victoria Together - Victorian government policy that provides clear measures and targets to focus on the issues that are central to people’s lives. Ten goals are identified for what is needed for Victoria. The goals balance social, economic and environmental considerations and form the basis of budget and policy decisions.

Country Education Project - a state-wide organisation that supports the provision of education within rural communities across Victoria. It covers communities who are located:

  • at least 130 kilometres from the CBD of Melbourne
  • at least 25 kilometres from a regional population centre of at least 10,000.

It supports, facilitates and co-ordinates a number of innovative and responsive programs for young people throughout rural Victoria, as well as advocating to education sectors, government and key stakeholders.

Health and community service careers - Introduces students to the range of occupations in health and community services with information for students, teachers, parents and employers.

The migration of non-metropolitan youth towards the cities – an ACER Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) report exploring the reasons young people stay or leave rural communities and the economic and social implications of youth migration to cities.

Rural Education Forum for Australia (REFA) - A collective of national organisations which represents consumers and/or providers of education services in rural and remote Australia. FEFA recognises the importance and value of people in rural and remote areas being able to realise their full potential and the fundamental importance of education enabling them to do this, based upon principles of social justice, equity and improved access to the range of goods, services and entitlements that impact on education or on services related to education and educational outcomes

Isolated Children Parents Association of Australia (ICPA) - voluntary national parent body dedicated to ensuring that all geographically isolated students have equality with their non-isolated peers, of access to an appropriate education.

Society for the Provision of Education in Rural Australia (SPERA) - links people with a diverse range of interests in education and training to promote the development of rural Australia by:

  • promoting a positive view of education and training in rural areas and encouraging innovation and initiative in the provision of rural services;
  • supporting and encouraging rural communities and educators to work towards the provision of quality education and training; and
  • providing a framework for the sharing of concerns, issues and experiences relating to education and training in rural areas.
