Career Resource Guidelines for Rural and Remote Young People

The localisation of information in the lessons in this resource can be used to assist young people in rural and remote locations.

Lessons in the Self Awareness and Decision Learning sections apply to young people from all geographical contexts. The Opportunity Awareness and Transition Planning sections are where localised information will be useful.

Opportunity awareness lessons

Earlier lessons in this section - What is work (Word - 613Kb) and Why work (Word - 480Kb) - should be completed by all students. Following lessons and worksheets can be adapted to suit local conditions.

Rural and remote young people need to be aware of the myriad of pathways and options open to them and how to navigate these pathways to make the best choices for themselves.

In exploring the world of work and analysing occupations, students should consider the impact of their location on education, training and employment options, but not be limited by this.

Some options will mean moving somewhere else to study or train. They should consider what this will mean for them from all aspects – emotional, social, financial etc. They should consider whether their chosen pathway can lead back to employment in their community.

Transition planning lessons

When students are planning their transitions, a class discussion of options may include:

  • Not leaving their community and finding studying, training and employment opportunities locally;
  • Studying or training elsewhere, then returning to the community to work;
  • Distance education that allows study from home, with contact block study elsewhere; or
  • Studying, training and working elsewhere.

While still at school, students should explore opportunities to experience life away from home. Some schools offer week long work experience programs in Melbourne and other regional centres. Students should attend the Open Days at institutions they are considering applying for, and use the opportunity to explore the environment around these institutions (physical locality, public transport, accommodation, and other services).

With the advances in technology, there are more options for young people in rural and remote locations, for study, training and (in some cases) employment from their home location.

To promote discussion with students on the implications of their post school choices, use the: What shall I do? lesson (Word - 470Kb).
