Employment Opportunities for Koorie Young People

These organisations can help young Koorie people and others working with Koorie young people to tap into the networks, resources and opportunities to gain employment in a variety of areas. They include traineeships, apprenticeships, graduate recruitment, direct employment and volunteering opportunities.

Victorian

Indigenous Training and Recruitment Initiatives Program - The Department of Human Services has implemented policies and programs to address the disadvantages experienced by Indigenous people in Victoria. INTRAIN is a key initiative supported by the department’s Indigenous Recruitment and Career Development Strategy. The Strategy was introduced to improve the diversity and responsiveness of the Victorian Public Sector to Indigenous issues by increasing employment opportunities for Victorian Indigenous people. The department offers a range of scholarships each year.

Indigenous Cadetship Program - The Victorian Government offers Indigenous cadetships to full time university or TAFE students of Indigenous background with an interest in working for government. Departments include Premier and Cabinet (DPC), Victorian Communities, Parks Victoria and others. Internships and the Indigenous cadetship are advertised on tertiary campuses and the Careers with the Victorian Government website.

Victoria Police - Victoria Police have an Aboriginal Advisory Unit driving the implementation of the Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers (ACLOs) Program.

Wur-cum barra - The Victorian Public Sector – Indigenous Employment Strategy aims to improve the diversity and responsiveness of the Victorian Public Sector to Indigenous issues. It establishes a 'whole of government' strategic framework for coordinating and sustaining government efforts to achieve a greater representation of Indigenous people within all areas and levels of the public sector.

QANTAS - Working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, through a range of initiatives including employment and training programs, community involvement and sponsorships, Qantas has an ATSI Program which employs a dedicated program coordinator. Currently, between one and two percent of the airlines workforce is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP) - Aimed at improving the job prospects of Indigenous Australian students, the program links full-time students undertaking a diploma, an advanced diploma or their first undergraduate degree with employers who can give them work placements and ongoing employment once they finish their studies. Employers assist cadets to gain professional experience and provide financial support while they are studying full time. Indigenous cadets undertake full time study and work placements totalling twelve weeks each year of their cadetship.

Australia Now - Indigenous programs Business and Employment - Information about business and employment programs aimed at overcoming the disadvantages experienced by many Indigenous people, strengthening partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses and providing financial assistance.

Centrelink Jobs - Centrelink Indigenous Cadetship Program - Provides assistance to students to complete study at an approved tertiary institution.

Indigenous Nursing Cadetship Opportunity - Blue Care specialise in Aged Care facilities including nursing homes, community nursing, Home and Community Care packages and many more, focused in rural Queensland.

National Library of Australia - Graduate Recruitment Program - A comprehensive and structured development program consisting of work placements and formal training which will prepare you for a varied career in the Library.

Indigenous Cadetships within Woodside - Woodside has instigated an Indigenous employee retention strategy and cultural awareness training for its employees aimed at maintaining long term employment for its Indigenous employees. Woodside's Indigenous employment strategy aims to develop skilled Indigenous employees who can participate in our Operations. This is done through:

Indigenous Community Volunteers - An independent, not-for-profit company that provides volunteers to work on projects in Indigenous communities in urban, rural or remote areas.
