Building Pathways: Resources to Support Transitions for Young People from Refugee Backgrounds - resources include a good practice framework and training materials, aimed at improving support provided to young people from refugee backgrounds as they move through education, training and employment.

The framework describes practical approaches to:

  • ‘What you can do’ as transition workers
  • ‘What the relevant sectors can do’ including program managers and policy makers.

The training materials outline five workshops for introducing and working through the issues and practices in the Building Pathways framework. The target audience for the workshops is those working with young people from refugee backgrounds as they move in or out of education, training and employment settings.

The materials for each workshop include:

  • a session plan
  • participant worksheets
  • a marking guide with suggested responses to worksheets
  • suggested slides/overheads to accompany workshops.

Languages and Multicultural Education Resources Centre (LMERC) - a specialist support centre for schools in languages other than English, English as a second language and multicultural education. Approved borrowers are able to borrow a wide range of resources including print, audio, video, CD-Rom, and poster materials. Talking in Tune is a guide for teachers working with interpreters.

Adult Multicultural Education Service (AMES) - AMES delivers specialist settlement, education and employment services through several program and service area to Victoria’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. AMES provides services and resources to assist with career development, including transition resources to assist schools in VET & VCAL and a number of resources on workplace communication.

At Work in Australia - a two part resource package to teach job seeking and workplace communication skills to ESL learners. Part 1 - Getting a Job: follows Sam, a young school leaver, and Olga, a recent arrival in Australia, in their search for work. It focuses on topics such as writing resumes, telephoning about jobs, cold canvassing, networking and interview skills. Part 2 - Getting on with the job: sees Sam and Olga in their new jobs, and looks at the workplace communications skills, behaviour and personal attributes valued by employers in Australia. Topics include following workplace instructions, socialising at work, negotiation and teamwork.

Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities Inc (ADEC) - an organisation to empower people with a disability from non-English speaking backgrounds, their carers, and families to fully participate as members of the Victorian community.
