TAFE and University Disability Support

Victorian TAFE Institutes and Universities have a disability liaison person to assist people with disabilities to participate and gain maximum benefit from their post-school studies.

They provide targeted support to students who have disabilities in one or more of the following areas: learning; intellectual; psychological; physical; neurological and/or medical.

Prospective or enrolled students with support needs should contact the Disability Liaison Service as early as possible to allow arrangements to be made. To register with the Disability Liaison Service, evidence of disability is needed.

An individualised learning support plan can be negotiated for eligible students. The plan is developed and periodically reviewed to assist students to study and participate as effectively and as independently as possible. The services included in a learning support plan vary according to the needs of each student and the requirements of their course. Examples of support are:

  • liaison with teachers
  • assistance with alternative formatting of class materials
  • modification to assessment tasks
  • equipment loans
  • adaptive technology
  • notetakers
  • tutors
  • arrangement of disabled parking and addressing physical access needs
  • arrangement of the use of special support software and technology
  • participation assistance in class
  • assistance outside of class
  • interpretation (Auslan)
  • use of a tutorial room.

Availability of certain support services is subject to funding.
