Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs)

Effective careers and transition programs are a vital component of school strategies to improve student engagement and increase school completion. Schools should have in place careers and transitions programs that provide every young person with careers advice to support them to make informed and effective course and career decisions, so that students can have every opportunity to succeed, and lead fulfilling and productive lives.

Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) funding supports Victorian Government schools’ careers and transition programs, including ensuring all students aged 15 years and over in government schools are provided with an individual Career Action Plan (MIPs/pathways plan) and associated support as a means to making a successful transition through the senior secondary years of education to further education, training or full-time employment. Schools are also funded through MIPs to provide additional support to students at risk of disengaging or not making a successful transition to further education, training or secure employment. For sample Career Action Plan templates, please see Year 10 - I Plan

MIPs aims to help young people to:

  • develop their knowledge and understanding of education, training and employment options, and
  • develop skills to effectively manage their careers and pathways throughout their lives.

The MIPs funding supports a key strategy to improve the transition from school by strengthening school responsibility for monitoring young people’s pathways until they complete Year 12 or equivalent.

Wannik MIPs

Wannik MIPs was introduced in Victorian government schools in 2009 to provide pathways planning and support services to Koorie students in Years 8 and 9.  Wannik MIPs supports the implementation of the Department’s Wannik Strategy which aims to improve education outcomes for Koorie students. For more information please see Wannik - Education Strategy for Koorie Students

Wannik MIPs has therefore been introduced to help Koorie students, from an early age, to understand the direct link between school achievement (and the year-level at which one leaves), and the options that will be available after leaving school, by:

  • increasing engagement by demonstrating the relevance of school to post-school outcomes
  • providing pathways planning and additional support to Koorie students at risk of leaving school early

Funding for Wannik MIPs is provided to schools with Koorie enrolments in Years 8 and 9, paid as a grant to schools in Term 2 each year, and does not affect MIPs funding allocations for students in Years 10-12.  Wannik MIPs funding is subject to accountability and reporting requirements.

For additional information for careers practitioners, MIPs coordinators, other school staff and the Koorie education workforce please see Effective Pathways for all Koorie Students (Word - 178Kb)
