Careers and Transitions

Providing a broad range of educational pathways is important in improving student outcomes. However, young people need support to understand the options and navigate the pathways from compulsory schooling to further education, training and employment. There are a range of programs and tools available to schools to assist them to support students in their transitions.

  • Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework - designed to provide a scaffold for teachers, trainers, career practitioners, team leaders, curriculum coordinators and school leaders to develop a localised and customised quality career development program for young people in schools, Adult Community Education (ACE) and TAFE.
  • Effective Strategies to Increase School Completion - The Effective Strategies to Increase School Completion Report and the Guide to help schools increase school completion are now available.
  • Career Education in Schools - Information about quality career education programs that are offered throughout schooling to assist young people in their career development process.
  • Learning and Teaching Careers Resources - A series of lesson plans designed to assist career educators to deliver quality programs for students from Year 6 to Year 10.
  • Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) - Includes case studies of good practice, a supporting electronic resource kit, Student Mapping Tool, accountability requirements and professional development.
  • Student Mapping Tool - A simple process that takes your own school’s data from the CASES21 database and displays it in a pre-formatted Excel spreadsheet.
  • What is a Career? - A career includes all the roles you undertake throughout your life - education, training, paid and unpaid work, family, volunteer work, leisure activities and more.
  • Resilience and Career Development - Includes information on the importance of resilience in career development.
  • Pathways to Getting a Career - Outlines the many pathways from school that can lead to a rewarding career.
  • Occupations - A vast array of information about occupations including occupations sorted according to different criteria to assist people in their career exploration.
  • Workplace Learning - Includes legislative requirements for Work Experience and Structured Workplace Learning, and information on Safe@Work
  • Information for Parents - Information on available options and pathways for young people.
  • Professional Learning - aims to enhance the capacity of MIPs coordinators and careers personnel
  • Careers Teachers in Industry - Case studies of teachers participating in the Industry Placement Program which can be used as a source of ideas for enhancing your school’s links with industry.

  • Regional Youth Commitments (RYC) - are a framework negotiated within and between all local and regional stakeholders to link and coordinate pathway and transitions support arrangements for 15-19 year olds.

Careers Curriculum Framework Forum - December 2010

The Careers Curriculum Framework Forum was held on Friday 3 December 2010 at the MCG, and was attended by careers practitioners in schools, ACE and TAFE, and teachers/trainers in careers and work education. The purpose of the forum was to inform careers practitioners of the content of the draft Careers Curriculum Framework and to test and evaluate the Framework. The Forum also provided the opportunity for practitioners to further develop their understanding and awareness of international trends and best practice in career development. The keynote speaker was Professor Tony Watts, an international policy consultant on career guidance and career development.

Making Career Development Core Business Report

The Making Career Development Core Business Report was prepared in December 2009 by the Centre for Post-compulsory Education and Lifelong Learning for the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Department of Business and Innovation.  It includes information on best practice in the provision of career development, on effectiveness of career development programs for young people in Victoria and recommendations for improving career development services.

 

Presentations from Dr Gideon Arulmani's Workshops - March 2010

On March 15 and 16, 2010 Dr Gideon Arulmani presented a series of workshops on career development for disengaged youth. Dr Arulmani is a clinical psychologist with a M. Phil in Medical and Social Psychology from the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (India) and a doctoral degree in Career Psychology from the University of Portsmouth (UK).  He also holds advanced diplomas in Counselling, Philosophy and Theology, and is the Founder and Managing Trustee of The Promise Foundation, headquartered in Bangalore, India.
