Mathematics

From Term 1 2017, Victorian government and Catholic schools will use the new Victorian Curriculum F-10. Curriculum related information is currently being reviewed and may be subject to change.

For more information on the curriculum, see:
The Victorian Curriculum F–10 - VCAA

The Mathematics curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, modelling and problem-solving.

These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.

Learning and teaching support

Professional learning

These Mathematics Education Associations resources will assist maths teachers develop their professional skills and knowledge.

Association of Teachers of Mathematics - Mathematics Teaching is a magazine of high quality articles ranging from research to anecdotes. It is published in the UK four times a year.

The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers - AAMT is the nation’s premier organisation of mathematics educators.

Australian Catholic University: The Mathematics Teaching and Learning Centre seeks to stimulate and support research and professional development in the teaching and learning of mathematics at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom - A professional journal of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Inc.

Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) - The MAV is a membership driven association that provides a voice, leadership and professional support for mathematical education.

Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) - MERGA is an association that aims to promote, share, disseminate, and co-operate on quality research on mathematics education for all levels particularly in Australasia.

Research

Early Numeracy Research Project (ENRP) - this research project (1999-01) involved 35 trial schools in the development of a comprehensive framework for mathematical development by identifying points of growth.

Middle Years Numeracy Research Project (MYNRP) - this research project (1999 – 2000) was commissioned to inform the development of a strategic and coordinated approach for schools about the teaching and learning of numeracy for students in Years 5-9.

Research eLert - Numeracy in practice: teaching, learning and using mathematics (pdf - 126.61kb) - This report is based on a focused literature search undertaken to identify local and international research in the area of numeracy learning and teaching.

Research eLert - Numeracy programs in schools (pdf - 110.9kb) – Case studies and accounts from teachers and schools trialling innovative ‘next’ practices related to numeracy.

Aims

The Mathematics curriculum aims to ensure that students:

  • develop useful mathematical and numeracy skills for everyday life, work and as active and critical citizens in a technological world
  • see connections and apply mathematical concepts, skills and processes to pose and solve problems in mathematics and in other disciplines and contexts
  • acquire specialist knowledge and skills in mathematics that provide for further study in the discipline
  • appreciate mathematics as a discipline – its history, ideas, problems and applications, aesthetics and philosophy.
