Key questions to be explored

  • Do we currently use an effective planning process for cohorts of students in our professional learning team/s?
  • How can we improve our professional learning team processes to develop curriculum programs that will best support the learning of all of our students?

Suggested time

1 hour (minimum)

Prior to the session

  • make A4 copies of Template 2.1A Characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students for each member of the professional learning team (you may want to provide these copies before the session so that team members can familiarise themselves with the characteristics)
  • prepare a downloadable electronic copy or A3 version of Template 2.1A Characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students to be completed as a professional learning team
  • have all completed templates from Module 1: Whole school curriculum planning to suit our students available for members of the professional learning team to refer to during Module 2.

Sequence of Activity

Step 1: Individual responses
Provide time for individual members of the professional learning team to read each of the characteristics referred to in Template 2.1A Characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students. Encourage them to make notes in response to each of the associated questions. Note: The three characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students are based on the ten characteristics for effective whole school curriculum planning. The three that have been selected for planning for cohorts of students focus directly on classroom practice.

Step 2: Collective response
As a team, share responses to the questions for each of the characteristics. Record all responses in a blank or electronic copy of Template 2.1A Characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students.

Step 3: Cross-checking against characteristics of effective whole school curriculum planning
Refer to the completed version of Template 1.1B Characteristics of effective whole school curriculum planning developed during Module 1. Incorporate any ideas from this template that may be missing from Template 2.1A Characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students.

Step 4: Summary
Summarise the responses for each of the characteristics of effective program planning for cohorts of students to refer to during all professional learning team curriculum planning sessions. This step can be done as a team or by one person with copies of the summary provided to all participants when complete. Note: When planning you may decide that other ideas need to be incorporated into the template to more effectively represent how you plan for cohorts of students.
