Developmental Learning Framework for School Leaders

The Developmental Learning Framework for School Leaders (PDF - 1.0Mb) describes the critical capabilities that leaders need to establish the conditions under which high quality learning and teaching takes place.

The Leadership Framework describes development within five domains of leadership – Technical, Human, Educational, Symbolic and Cultural - and distinguishes between levels of proficiency.

The key purpose of the Leadership Framework is to assist teachers and school leaders to participate in professional learning that is relevant to their development needs.

The Leadership Framework can be used in a variety of ways, for example,

  • Self-assessment
  • Performance and development reviews
  • Principal selection
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Leadership induction and planning
  • Designing professional learning activities for teachers and school leaders

The Developmental Learning Framework for School Leaders is available for teachers and school leaders to self assess their leadership capabilities.

Central to the Development Learning Framework for School Leaders is the iLead 360º survey which is a web based online tool that will enable teachers and school leaders to receive comprehensive feedback about their leadership from a range of individuals.

About the survey

The iLead 360° Survey complements the Development Learning Framework for School Leaders by providing a more accurate and rounded assessment of their leadership capacity. It recognises that leadership effectiveness is contingent on relationships at every level. Consequently, as well as rating themselves, the survey provides them with the opportunity to receive feedback from multiple sources including their peers, reporting staff and principal/manager.

The iLead 360° Survey is intended to assist teachers and school leaders to reflect upon their leadership practice, identify strengths and areas for improvement, map key factors that effect their professional development, assist in setting professional learning goals, and inform the development of their professional learning plan. Survey results should be used to enhance conversations about leadership development and invoke and enrich dialogue linked to performance and development reviews.

The iLead 360˚ Survey tool offers two surveys:

iLead 360˚ Survey - Self Assessment Survey (SAS)

The iLead Self Assessment Survey (iLead SAS) will allow you to reflect on your leadership capabilities and ascertain your level of proficiency in the domains of the Developmental Learning Framework for School Leaders, based on only your survey responses.

iLead 360˚ Survey - 360˚ Survey

The iLead 360˚ Survey will provide a more rounded and objective assessment of your school leadership capabilities by including feedback on your performance from a variety of people including your manager, peers and reporting staff.
