Internationalising schooling

From Term 1 2017, Victorian government and Catholic schools will use the new Victorian Curriculum F-10. Curriculum related information is currently being reviewed and may be subject to change.

Australia is one of the most multicultural societies in the world and globalisation places greater emphasis on the need for intercultural awareness and skills to sustain the cultural diversity of our richly complex society.

The global economy and technology are transforming Australia’s economy and society. The work people do is changing and in order to prosper, skills need to be adapted. Young Australians need competencies to live and work all over the world in global teams with global clients.

We know that schools that make internationalising an integral aspect of their teaching and learning are better placed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attributes required to thrive in a globalised world. Many schools have requested practical advice on starting, improving or expanding their internationalising practices, which is why the Department has produced Internationalising Schooling: A how-to guide for schools. It provides advice and resources on:

  • building a whole-school approach to internationalisation
  • informing curriculum, assessment and instruction
  • creating sister schools and overseas learning experiences
  • forging community partnerships
  • integrating international students

Sister school resource kit

This resource is aimed at supporting Victorian schools at different stages of their sister school partnerships. This includes schools who want to take the first steps to establish a partnership, those with established partnerships, as well as those with strong and effective sister school partnerships.

For more information, see: Sister school resource kit.

Schools Connect

The Schools Connect portal is an online platform that connects Victorian schools with schools local and global for sister school partnerships or project collaboration.

Leading Asia Capable Schools

Leading Asia Capable Schools is aligned to the Department's Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO), supporting the statewide priority of Community Engagement with Learning, particularly Global Citizenship.

The course at Bastow is open to all Victorian school principals, assistant principals and leading teachers. It is a blended model of professional learning that includes face-to-face workshops, an online community of practice and an offshore program in China to study and visit schools and companies engaging with Victoria.

Overseas Learning Experiences

Overseas Learning Experiences for Students: A Resource for Schools (OLE) has been designed to support schools in effective planning, implementation and integration of student overseas learning experiences into school programs. It draws upon the work of schools that have successfully incorporated such experiences into whole-school programs for international education.

Doing Diversity

Doing Diversity: Intercultural capability in primary and secondary schools highlights factors that facilitate or impede intercultural understanding and provides a knowledge base for improving education resources and practices. Doing Diversity is an Australian Research Council Linkage Project and was led by the School of Education at Deakin University in partnership with the Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
