Families as Partners in Learning

From Term 1 2017, Victorian government and Catholic schools will use the new Victorian Curriculum F-10. Curriculum related information is currently being reviewed and may be subject to change.

There are many approaches schools can take to effectively establish family partnerships. Some strategies will be more useful than others. Principals and school leaders should take positive steps to engage with staff and families to identify the strategies that best suit their community.

How schools can use this resource

The Seven Dimensions of Family Partnerships help schools think beyond the traditional types of family involvement. They are intended to encourage a broader view of, and a commitment to, valuing the central role that family participation has to children’s learning and development.

This section of the website is a tool that schools can dip into at their own pace. It is not necessarily designed for schools to work through in a consecutive manner, though this approach can be adopted if considered appropriate.

Schools are not required to implement every strategy across each dimension.  Rather Principals, teachers and school staff are encouraged to select the particular dimensions that they would like to address and use the strategies, tools and case studies to build on and strengthen their family partnerships.

Starting a meaningful conversation

It is important before reflecting on how the school is currently working with families, to develop a common understanding of what a successful partnership means in the school environment.

These presentations will provide school leaders, teachers and school staff with a common language to start these conversations. To view the presenters notes simply download the file.

Working in Partnership with Families video
