What is School Focused Youth Service?
Through School Focused Youth Service (SFYS), schools and community organisations work together to support young people aged 10-18 years who are attending school, but are vulnerable to or showing signs of disengagement from school, to remain connected to education. SFYS is available across all school sectors (government, Catholic and independent) in Victoria.
SFYS providers deliver and/or connect schools to a wide range of services, including direct interventions for young people, capacity building for school staff and partners, and local planning to identify and address disengagement.
SFYS' contribution to the Education State
The Victorian Government has a
strong vision for Victoria as an Education State.
As an Education State, Victoria
will focus on improving outcomes for every student, in every classroom and in
every community. To achieve this vision
the system must strengthen its focus on supporting young people who are at risk
of disengaging (or disengaged from education) to reach their potential.
This is why the Government is
implementing a range of newly funded initiatives (including the Navigator
pilots) and is also driving improvement in a range of existing services
Guidelines and recent changes
SFYS has been supporting schools and young people since 1998. In late 2015, the Victorian Government committed to re-investing and strengthening the service over 2016-17. The Department has worked with providers and key stakeholders to develop new guidelines (see link below) for the program, which:
- strengthen the focus on disengagement, and create greater alignment with new and existing programs (including the Navigator pilots announced as part of Education State initiatives)
- draw on feedback from stakeholders and the recommendations from the 2013-15 program evaluation.
The guidelines also introduce new planning, reporting and accountability processes, requiring providers to clearly target and map the impact of SFYS activities, as well as new governance arrangements.
Continuum of supports
SFYS is one of a continuum of programs and services that are available to support vulnerable young people to stay engaged in education. An overview of this continuum of supports is outlined in the new guidelines, including universal prevention strategies (for the broader student population), programs for specific cohorts, and outreach (non-school based) programs.
