We hope you are feeling both excited and well prepared for secondary school - but you might also feel a bit nervous or not quite sure of what's ahead.

The biggest challenges students often face when moving from primary school to secondary school are managing the increased workload and their relationships with teachers and friends. Students also often have concerns about finding their way around a large and unfamiliar school environment - although these concerns are quickly resolved once students get to know the school.

What Other Kids Say

"Be excited and think positive."
(Year 6 student)

"Surround yourself with good people."
(Year 6 student)

"Of course it's going to be harder – if it doesn't get harder how are we going to learn?"
(Year 6 student)

"You are thrown into a new environment where you have to suddenly make new friends, meet new people and do things that you've never done before. Of course this is difficult, especially if you have entered a school without any of your old friends (e.g. myself). It is a scary thing because of the unknown."
(Year 7 student)

"You might be worried about what will happen on the first day: finding classrooms, using the toilets, getting the right bus home, but it's also exciting to move on from primary school and keep growing up!"
(Year 7 student)

"I reckon all the teachers [at my school] have been trying to prepare us for high school for years. I remember in Year 5 my teacher was telling us that we need to knuckle down if we are going to get to high school. And all the teachers in Year 6 are helping us out heaps – giving us Year 7 work to get us prepared for high school. So I reckon everything is fine."
(Year 6 student)

Each year Knox City Council hosts the Knox Schools Expo event for families choosing a secondary school and preparing for the transition from primary to secondary.

Knox City Council Youth Services asked seven young people seven questions about their experience with transition. Their words have been animated by Gregg Brown from Play Animation in partnership with Knox City Council Youth Services.
