Every student deserves a safe and positive learning experience where they are engaged and supported to reach their full potential.
The Student Engagement and Inclusion Guidance provides advice, resources and strategies for schools on:
- developing a Student Engagement Policy
- promoting positive student behaviour
- responding to challenging behaviour.
It outlines how and when to implement appropriate disciplinary measures, and provides resources schools can access to support and improve student engagement.
Ultimately, local school communities know what is best for their school. The Student Engagement and Inclusion Guidance recognises this expertise by providing schools with the guidance and tools they need to use their local knowledge to create and maintain positive, safe and engaging school cultures.
This Guidance operationalises Ministerial Order 625 - Suspensions and Expulsions, which takes effect from 1 March, 2014. It provides guidance as to how you fulfill your obligations under Ministerial Order 625. See: Ministerial Order 625 - Suspensions and Expulsions (pdf - 3.94mb)
The Guidance includes the following components:
Student Engagement Policy
Provides advice on the development of a school-based policy. See: Student Engagement Policy
Contains information on factors influencing student behaviour, and guidance on promoting positive behaviour and using a staged response to respond to challenging behaviours. See: Student Behaviour
Strategies and Support Available to Schools
Details resources available to schools and suggests strategies to support engagement, including strategies tailored to specific groups at risk of becoming disengaged. See: Strategies and Supports Available to Schools
Provides guidance on when and how to use disciplinary measures, including procedures for suspension and expulsion. Suspension and expulsion are serious disciplinary measures and should be the last step in a staged response to address challenging student behaviour. See: Disciplinary Measures
