School maintenance and minor works funding
All Victorian Government schools receive funding through the Student Resource Package for maintenance and minor works.
Schools are encouraged to undertake proactive maintenance planning, using all available information, including the results of the recent state-wide condition assessment. It is vital that schools use their Maintenance and Minor Works allocation for the active and ongoing maintenance of facilities and to prevent potential health and safety issues.
The allocation of funding includes an allowance for annual contracts and essential services to provide for the servicing and inspection of various equipment including heating plants, air conditioning, specialised fire equipment and emergency exit lighting (‘essential services’), lifts, EPA licensed sewerage treatment, water treatment systems, sanitary and nappy bins, and termite inspections.
Planned Maintenance Program
In addition to funding to schools for maintenance through the Student Resource Package, the Department allocates funding each year to school maintenance priorities through the Planned Maintenance Program.
The annual Planned Maintenance Program is currently determined using the evidence and data gathered in the 2011-12 maintenance audit of all buildings at all Victorian government schools.
In 2013, $51.5 million was provided to 250 Victorian government schools for priority maintenance. A program for 2014 will be announced soon.
In 2011-12, a maintenance audit was conducted on all Victorian government schools and 27,000 school buildings. Every Victorian Government school has received its own school condition assessment report to inform maintenance and infrastructure planning.
The audit’s purpose was to better direct maintenance funding to priorities in schools and give principals the information they need to better manage their facilities.

Emergency Maintenance Program
The Emergency Maintenance Program has been established to address unforeseen maintenance issues that pose an immediate risk to the health and safety of school users. Where existing school funds are not sufficient, Victorian Government schools can apply for funding under the program.
Schools can access the application form via the Emergency Maintenance Program
The Contract Cleaners Panel comprises approved cleaning contractors with skills and expertise appropriate to Victorian Government schools. School Councils must engage the services of a cleaner that is registered on the Panel.
