Disciplined Innovation

The successful stimulation, testing and acceleration of innovative practice in systems is a function of the alignment of culture, connection and capability within organisations.

Evaluation of the Design Teams project indicates that regardless of where innovation occurs or what it is focused on, a disciplined approach to innovation is capable of stimulating and accelerating development of ideas, practices and products that can be transferred across the education system. Where innovative culture, capability and connections are aligned the innovative potential of Victoria’s education practitioners can be unlocked to realise student, school and system benefits.

model of elements for unlocking innovation - Culture, Capability and Connections

Culture

  • Provide an environment and leadership within the Department, the education system and within schools that legitimises and encourages targeted innovation

Capability

  • Provide practitioners with access to opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills
  • Facilitate practitioners’ access to resources
  • Provide encouragement and guidance that builds confidence

Connections

  • Provide access to experts and research in relevant fields
  • Provide access to leading edge practitioners from around the world
  • Encourage networking opportunities

These three key elements were critical to the pace and progress of innovation. Where they were strongest the Design Teams schools advanced more quickly, more smoothly and with greater effect.
