Getting Started

Students attending an online event

It’s easy to start participating in web conferences. The only equipment you need is a computer with an internet connection and a microphone headset to enable you to listen, speak and participate in activities. You can also use a webcam if you have one, to integrate video into your web conference.

To prepare for your first web conference, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Install the software

To use BlackBoard Collaborate, you need to have Java Webstart installed on your computer. See: How do I test whether Java is working on my computer?

If you do not have Java installed, see: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

Step 2: Test your connection

The Virtual Conference Centre training room is open 24 hours for you to practise in. Once you have installed BlackBoard Collaborate you should visit the training room to check everything is set up properly.

When you enter the training room you will be asked for a user name. This will be listed as your name in the room and will be viewable to any other participants. Use your full name at this prompt (eg John Smith). If you wish, you can also include some identifying information, such as the name of the school you are from.

Enter the Training Room

If you have trouble connecting to the training room, you will find solutions on our website to the most common connection issues, see: Support

Step 3: Prepare for your web conference

Here are some quick tips on how to prepare for any web conference session:

  • Find a comfortable place to sit with minimal distractions or background noise.
  • Most web conferences will allow you enter the session 60 minutes before the starting time. Try to enter the conference as early as possible to ensure that you will be connected and ready to go when the session begins.
  • Connect your microphone headset to your computer and set up your audio well before the session starts. The Audio Setup Wizard will step you through how to do this (Go to the Tools menu, select Audio, then click on Audio Setup Wizard)
  • Add your contact details and a photo to your profile to show others who you are and where you work (Right-click your name and select Edit Profile)

You can access an online orientation guide which steps you through how to prepare for your first web conference in BlackBoard Collaborate, see: BlackBoard Collaborate Orientation
