Web conferencing or virtual classrooms are used to conduct live meetings or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference or virtual classroom session, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet.
The participant either downloads an application on to their individual computers or simply enters a website address into their browser to enter a web-based conference.
Web conferencing or virtual delivery of knowledge can be either one way with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast; or collaborative which includes polling, chat, sharing of files etc. allowing full participation between the audience and the presenter.
Software commonly used for online conferencing or virtual classrooms includes: elluminate, WebEx, Polycom, Adobe Connect, Skype and Centra.
