Mark Pesce

Writer, researcher, teacher and television presenter

In the plenary Mark talked about how it was crucial to engage with social networks and media in the classroom to avoid students “powering down” when they arrived at school.

He said not acknowledging the importance of the internet in the lives of students would lead them to feel that entering the classroom was like going back in time. “What teachers offer to students is the wisdom students don’t walk into the classroom with,” he said.

In 1990, enthralled with the idea of virtual reality, Mark founded his own company to make virtual reality toys; his patents and designs were licensed by Sega.

Mark has written six books, is the Lecturer in Interactive Media at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney, and is a sought-after speaker at conferences throughout Australia and the world.
