Understanding by design and What works in schools - Dr Jay McTighe and Dr Robert Marzano, 8 May 2006
The Research Branch hosted a forum, on 8 May 2006, with Dr Jay McTighe and Dr Robert Marzano.
Dr McTighe provided an overview of Understanding by Design, a framework for improving student achievement. Emphasising the teacher's critical role as a designer of student learning, Understanding by Design works within the standards-driven curriculum to help teachers clarify learning goals, devise revealing assessments of student understanding, and craft effective and engaging learning activities.
Dr Marzano outlined the key points of What works in schools? – the specific actions that schools can take to dramatically enhance their effectiveness, particularly at the school level, to ensure that students experience dramatic gains in their learning regardless of their bacground.
