2010-11 Research Forums and Master Classes with Professor John Hattie
The Research Branch hosted a series of forums and master classes with Professor John Hattie between Tuesday 31 August 2010 to Thursday 17 February 2011. The series incorporated research presentations, master classes as well as opportunities for schools to undertake a range of research projects and then report back and share findings at the final forum in the series.
From the most recent to the earliest, information about the research series is outlined below:
The Making Learning Visible forum: schools' research project presentations
The final forum was held on Thursday 17 February 2011; organised by the Research Branch in collaboration with the Catholic Education Office and the Bastow Institute. Schools shared their findings on the research projects undertaken following the three day master classes. Research included using Professor Hattie’s ‘effect sizes’ to map student progress; moving students to a deeper level of understanding in a subject area; and reflecting on teaching practice and feedback mechanisms. There were several presentations including from:
Warrnambool College: Focussing on reflective practice and feedback mechanisms in order to improve the metacognition of students, the college has collected and analysed data, using Hattie’s student and staff feedback surveys. The college is also undertaking professional learning through Deakin University to build theory and practice to build teacher capacity.
The Catholic Education Office: Enhanced Reading Intervention Knowledge (ERIK), which looked at the effectiveness of the ERIK program operating in over 200 Catholic schools.

Making Learning Visible: Master classes
Victorian schools undertook a series of master classes with Professor Hattie. The master classes were held over three days from Tuesday 5 October 2010 to Thursday 7 October 2010; and the themes for the three days were:
- Day 1: Leaders as evaluators
- Day 2: Visible learning inside
- Day 3: Moving from research and policy to practice in your School
The focus of the master classes was three-fold:
- Understanding the meta-analyses related to achievement and discussing the nature of the evidence.
- Making links between Professor Hattie’s work and the Victorian context.
- Moving from research to policy and practice. What does it mean and how does it look at school and network level?
The Making Learning Visible forum
The Making Learning Visible forum was held on Tuesday 31 August 2010 (with a repeat forum on Wednesday September 1 2010).
Professor John Hattie, Professor of Education and Director of Visible Learning Labs (VLL) at the University of Auckland New Zealand, Debra Masters, Associate Director VLL and Julie Schumacher Professional Development Manager VLL presented and ran workshops for nearly 600 participants.
The forum provided a significant opportunity for school leaders and staff, research and policy officers, regional network leaders and coaches to hear about Professor Hattie’s research and to discuss his evidence-based framework for teaching and learning and its application to Victorian schools.
Professor Hattie’s keynote address focused on the results of 15 years of research and syntheses of the influences on student achievement. His research highlights the power of feedback, the influences of home and the school, the curriculum and approaches to teaching and the interactions between these influences.
