Effective Chance and Data Investigations

This session presented strategies for engaging students in the concept of probability. The process of the ‘Five key stages of a chance and data investigation’ were covered along with the value of comparing theoretical and experimental probability. Brian Lannen shared his hands-on approach, including the use of graphics calculators and interactive simulations, to enable his students to effectively experiment with chance and data.

About the presenter

Brian teaches Maths at Victory Lutheran College, Wodonga. He has taught for over 25 years in both Victoria and NSW in state and independent schools. Brian has also worked in curriculum consultancy and teacher training and contributed to a range of writing projects, the most recent of which was writing a set of briefs for the development of software for use on interactive white boards. He has conducted numerous conference sessions for the Mathematical Assiciation of Victoria, MANSW and AAMT as well as teacher training programs on the use of graphics calculators.
