Reading Recovery is an early literacy intervention designed to provide intensive additional assistance to that of the classroom, aiming to bring the lowest performing Year 1 children up to a level where they can be full participants in the mainstream curriculum.
The Reading Recovery training program develops teachers’ expertise with the theory and teaching procedures of the intervention and assists them to adapt the daily instruction to the learning needs of individual children. The average text level growth experienced by Year 1 Reading Recovery students in Western Metropolitan Region is approximately 14 levels which is the highest growth rate in Victoria.
Teachers undertaking Reading Recovery training participate in three full days of training at the commencement of the school year and 18 half-day training sessions for the remainder of the year. Additionally they receive regular school-based visits from a Reading Recovery Tutor. The training year is facilitated by one of Western Metropolitan Region Reading Recovery Tutors, within guidelines developed by DEECD Reading Recovery Victoria.
Teachers who continue in a Reading Recovery role receive ongoing support of regional Reading Recovery tutors:
