Languages Other Than English (LOTE) in Schools
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development places a high priority on the teaching and learning of languages as an integral component of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards for all students.
Learning a language:
- develops understanding of students’ own and others’ languages, thus developing a wider range of literacy skills, including English literacy
- assists thinking critically and analytically, solving problems and making connections in learning
- teaches students about other peoples, their ideas and ways of thinking
- inspires interest in and respect for other cultures
- contributes to social cohesiveness through better communication and understanding
- contributes to economic, diplomatic and strategic development.
A range of professional learning is conducted for LOTE teachers in the Western Metropolitan Region on contemporary languages pedagogy.
