Later Years of Schooling
Secondary schools in the Barwon South Western region offer a wide range of choices to students in their senior years of school to support their move into further education and a job in the workforce.
Students can choose courses and units from a range of options including Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) or Vocational Education and Training (VET) units. The VCE is usually completed in Years 11 and 12, but can be started in Year 10.
VCAL is a more hands-on option for Years 11 and 12 students, offering practical work-related experience and learning. Like VCE, VCAL is an accredited secondary certificate.
Our secondary schools offer a wide range of VCE subjects and many schools offer VCAL at a range of levels (Foundation, Intermediate and Senior).
VET units can contribute to satisfactory completion of the VCE and are a fundamental part of VCAL.
Careers and transitions
Schools provide career teachers who support young people to understand their options when leaving school, and to work out the best path for them from compulsory schooling to further education, training and employment.
