Pathways and Transitions

Preparing young people for the transition from school into further education and careers is a critical element in senior secondary teaching. All teachers have a part to play in leading and preparing students for their future. Providing a broad range of educational pathways is important in improving student outcomes. Young people need support to understand the options and navigate the pathways from compulsory schooling to further education, training and employment.

Our region supports teachers in the following areas:

  • Collaboration - we work with schools, the Youth Transitions Division and other organisations (Local Learning and Employment Networks, Local Community Partnerships and Careers Advice Australia) to ensure that all students have access to quality pathways and transition programs.
  • The Youth Commitment program – is a collaborative approach involving schools, industry, business and community groups. The three Barwon South Western Region Local Learning and Employment Networks have developed local youth commitment charters and are working with our regional office to implement and develop these.
  • Local Learning and Employment Networks - facilitate many projects to enhance outcomes for young people. They have the responsibility to bring together education providers, industry, community organisations and individual and government organisations to improve education, training and employment outcomes for young people in communities across Victoria.

The Department’s website provides information on a range of policy, programs and tools available to schools to assist them to support students in their transition from school, see Youth transitions.
