Refresher Courses

1. Refresher Courses for Returning Teachers

Refresher courses provide teachers returning to the profession with an opportunity to catch up on the latest developments in education, including the most current school and classroom practices, curriculum and pedagogy.

Returning teachers need to work together to share experiences, fears, concerns, hopes and expectations. Networking, through refresher courses, provides support for information sharing, reassurance and confidence building.

Reflection is an integral aspect of the course. Opportunities to reflect enable self-questioning, evaluating of one's own practice, re-thinking and re-aligning.

Please note that completion of this refresher course does not guarantee employment in a government school. The usual school selection processes apply.

Who are refresher courses for?

Qualified teachers who:

  • Have not taught in a Victorian government school within the last three years
  • Are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (http://www.vit.vic.edu.au)

Teachers who have worked as Casual Replacement Teachers during this time, and registered teachers who have interstate and/or overseas training /experience and who have not taught in a Victorian government school, are also eligible to apply.

Priority will be given to applicants who express interest in teaching in a government school in hard to staff locations and subject areas.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) is offering a second program for internationally trained teachers in 2009. Participants will also be supported to enhance their capacity to communicate through the use of the spoken English language. As part of the program, participants will undertake a 5 week teaching placement in a Victorian government school. The course will be located in the City of Melbourne and will commence on Monday the 25th of May 2009.

The full time course will be of 3 months duration.
