Education Support Professional Learning

Recognising the valuable contribution that education support staff make to children’s lives through support to teachers and students, the Department is providing professional learning opportunities to support improved practice.

With high quality professional learning being a cornerstone to an effective school, these professional learning activities can assist education support staff in developing skills and knowledge to do their job more effectively and support improved student learning outcomes.

Programs

The following Professional Learning programs will be available for education support staff in 2012.

  • A Window into Autism is a program for education support staff that support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It covers core impairments, the spectrum of autistic disorders, the learning and behavioural characteristics of the autistic child and specialised interventions.
  • A Window into Autism Extension supports education support staff to build on existing learning and knowledge of ASD and extend their understanding of a range of strategies to meet ASD students’ additional needs.
  • Literacy Success – Reading program aims to develop knowledge of how students learn to read and provide a range of practical ideas for education support staff to support teachers in the classroom with reading.
  • Literacy Success – Comprehension program aims to build knowledge, skills and capacity of education support staff to support student literacy outcomes with a particular focus on reading comprehension and will complement previous professional learning related to reading.

  • Leadership for Business Managers is designed to develop the leadership capacity of business managers in order to expand and improve the effectiveness of their roles as leaders within schools. Further information and application forms are available from Bastow: Leadership for Business Managers

Education Support Professional Learning Grants

Applications for Education Support Professional Learning Grants are now closed.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome by 4 June 2012 and funding for successful applications will be dispersed to schools by 22 June 2012.

Other professional learning

  • Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) – in association with the Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association (ASLIA Vic) is providing professional learning programs for educational support staff who provide Auslan interpretation in classrooms.
  • Professional Development for School Business Managers – listing of financial management support and resources available.
  • School Systems Training and Support (secure website - requires eduMail pin and password) – offers over 40 face-to-face training modules as well as a variety of online training modules for current Education Support staff and new users. Training sessions are offered at regional training centres.
