Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership

Bastow Institute

The establishment of the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership is the cornerstone of the Government’s continued and substantial investment in building the knowledge and skill of all professionals in the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

In 2010 the Bastow Institute will offer an exciting suite of programs and modules which will support the development of effective leadership in the education and early childhood workforce.

Building on Strong Foundations

The Department’s leadership development strategy has its origins in the Blueprint for Government Schools (2003) which set out initiatives designed to improve teacher practice and student learning. The Blueprint included a strong focus on building leadership capacity.

In 2006 the Department launched its strategy Learning to Lead Effective Schools. The strategy was specifically designed to develop the leadership capabilities of aspiring leaders, principal class and leadership teams.  The diverse range of programs has been highly successful and more than 7000 teachers and school leaders have participated.

The level of participation in these programs indicates that our workforce demands high quality learning experiences, underpinned by evidence-based models and frameworks that enable them to develop themselves and pursue their leadership aspirations.

“…the Victorian approach to school leadership development is at the cutting edge. The Department has created professional learning opportunities for leaders at all levels of the system to seize, and the increasing numbers who have done so inject further knowledge and vitality into the system. This results in building human as well as knowledge capital on a large scale.” (OECD 2007)

The Blueprint for Education and Early Childhood Development (2008) reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to developing a culture of effective leadership and professional learning by announcing the establishment of a world class learning centre, the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership.
