2013 lists

The inclusion of a book on the list does not mean it is a recommended text for all children.  The book list provides a broad range of books from which young children, students, parents, guardians and educators can choose appropriate reading material for individual challengers.  If parents have any concerns about the content of titles on the Challenge book lists we encourage them to become involved in the selection of books their children read for the Challenge to ensure they are appropriate.

No books have been deleted from the Challenge lists for 2013.

Each title on these lists has been allocated to the year level or levels for which it is usually most appropriate. A number of titles therefore appear on more than one list. There are five  lists. The list of books for Year 9 and 10 is for mature readers. The list includes a range of young adult titles from which students, parents and teachers can choose reading material which is appropriate for each individual. The books on this list are diverse in style and contain a broad range of themes and ideas. They reflect the reading habits and choices made by some young adolescents. The inclusion of a book on this list does not mean it is a recommended text for all students.

cover of Meet Letty
Meet Letty

by Alison Lloyd

Letty is on the docks in England, farewelling her bossy older sister who is about to take a long sea voyage to Australia. But then there is a mix-up and before she knows it Letty finds herself on the ship too, travelling to New York.

My favourite book

I can't read yet. When I go to school I think I will learn to read. My favourite book is a penguin book. I don't know what it's called. A little penguin has to follow footprints to try to find his mum and dad.
