A message from the Premier

Welcome to the 2008 Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge!

I am delighted to renew the invitation to Victorian students to take this fourth annual Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Over the past three years, Victorian students have read more than seven million books in their reading for the Challenge!  Collectively they have discovered new worlds, new words, new ideas and new friends in books.  They have developed new skills in reading and literacy and for learning in all areas of their lives.

This year I invite all students from Prep to Year 10 to take up the Challenge.  For students in Prep to Year 2, the challenge is to read or ‘experience’ 30 books by 31 August, including 20 or more from my booklist.  My challenge for Years 3 to 10 students is to read 15 books by 31 August, including 10 or more from my booklist.

I will send a signed certificate to all students who meet these challenges.

On these web pages, you will find all the answers to your questions and information you need to know to take the Challenge.

I look forward to hearing of the achievements and discoveries of all the students who take up this year’s Challenge.  May all these books lead to great adventures!

Al Dentay and the Incredible Spaghetti Machine

by Bruce Atherton

A terrible accident sets off a chain of events that leads Allan Dentay to the discovery of an amazing machine.

Why I love reading…

My favourite book is ‘Star School’.

It is a drama about trying to get into a popular high school.

The book is both funny and sad – sort of like real life.
