School Compliance Checklist

About the Checklist

The School Compliance Checklist (the Checklist) was implemented across all Victorian government schools in February 2007 and is the final element of the School Accountability and Improvement Framework.

The Checklist is a ‘one-stop’ online self-assessment tool designed to assist schools to manage and monitor their compliance with legislation and department policy, and to streamline and consolidate reporting requirements.

The Checklist:

  •  identifies compliance requirements that apply to schools in one place
  •  provides schools with a clear understanding of the compliance requirements
  •  assists schools to self-assess their level of compliance
  •  provides guidance to schools on how to become compliant
  •  provides details of key contacts for further information.

Completing the Checklist

While completion of the Checklist is mandatory for all schools, it is not anticipated that all schools will be fully compliant initially with all items. It is expected that schools will work towards compliance over time.

Wherever possible, the self-assessment of items has been aligned with the day-to-day operations of the school.  For example; if the compliance activity occurs in Term 1 then the scheduled self-assessment (date due by) will be the end of Term 1.  Early into the next term the Department will run a compliance status report across all Victorian government schools for items due in the previous term.

Completion of the checklist may be seen by some schools as an additional administrative burden.  However the actual time taken to indicate compliance status on the Checklist is minimal. Anecdotal feedback suggests the Checklist actually streamlines the process, making it easier for schools to understand their compliance requirements, locate relevant policies and gain assistance more quickly.

Once all items on the Checklist are completed, schools subsequent years’ assessments will be quicker as the many “ongoing” items need only be assessed again if the school’s situation changes or there is a change to the compliance requirement. Annual items will need to be re-assessed each year.

The Checklist can be accessed directly via the following link: https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/scc (Note: secure site. Requires EduMail PIN and password)

For support in ensuring full compliance with an item, schools can contact the relevant program area. Contact details are provided on each individual compliance item.
