School Camps, Plantations and Teacher Housing

School camps

There are approximately 30 school-controlled camps across Victoria. Schools are responsible for:

  • maintenance of the property in a safe and clean condition, particularly in fire-danger areas;
  • the provision and maintenance of buildings, services and fences;
  • compliance of facilities with all codes and regulations;
  • the development of emergency procedures which detail location and access to the site.

Plantations and forests

There are approximately 500 school-controlled timber plantation sites used for timber plantation production, arboreta and environmental study purposes.

Following the harvest of a plantation, the Department’s Property Unit should be consulted prior to any re-planting. In the event that the site is not to be re-planted, the Unit may arrange for its reuse or disposal.

Teacher housing

The Department owns a portfolio of approximately 270 residential properties in 86 localities across regional Victoria. This accommodates teachers in rural or isolated areas where a private rental market is not operating.
