Software for Education
PaperCut Quota published by PaperCut
PaperCut is utilised by the school Network Administrators to track, control, quota and charge for printing and/or internet use. Administrators define costs for various printing scenarios, or in the case of internet usage, a cost per MB or time limit. Usage is then calculated and charged to an appropriate account. Users may have personal balances or the ability to charge to a shared account used by a faculty. The software can be used in a number of modes, including but not limited to:
- Quota or budget use (e.g. $10.00 per month, $25 per term)
- Charge students via an up-front or pay-as-you-go model
- Silently monitor usage
- Or any combination of the above
PaperCut NG also includes tools to streamline student payment processes and account management including a simple web browser based administration and even a wizard to design a set of Topup cards that can be used for redemption anywhere in the school. Larger schools may want to investigate various online payment gateway options, further reducing administrative overheads.
Recent improvements in PaperCut NG include a Web Print module that allows for driver-less printing of common document formats (PDF, DOC, XLS etc), an advanced scripting feature that allows fine tuning of the printing environment such as modifying the cost of printing at certain times of the day. Administrators can also enable Hold/Release queues requiring users to confirm print jobs at the printer, promoting further savings on paper and toner costs.
PaperCut NG is an Australian developed solution first released in 1999 (as PaperCut Quota) and designed in conjunction with a number of Melbourne schools. PaperCut NG is now translated into 19 different languages and in use in over 100 countries. PaperCut still works closely with Victorian schools in developing innovative new features such as the TopUp cards in 2004. If you have qu
