EduMail

Electronic Messaging Service

Overview

The EduMail service, established in 1998, is an electronic messaging system that is available to over 74,500 staff and teachers in Victorian Government schools and Departmental sites.

Goals

The aim of the EduMail service is to improve the overall communication, storage and distribution of information by:

  • Providing an effective means of electronic communication between schools, and Departmental administrative centres;
  • Achieving considerable cost savings in phone, fax, mail, printing and photocopying; and
  • Allowing staff with Internet connections at home or anywhere in the world to access their EduMail Mailbox.

The main outcome of the EduMail service is the significant enhancement of electronic communication between all staff in Victorian schools and Departmental administrative centres, resulting in overall improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of Victorian school operations

Implementation

The EduMail service, including the EduMail Mailbox for electronic mail, was originally made available to schools during the first half of 1998. It is installed on servers within the Department's central office enabling the exchange of mail between 1,700 school sites and 2,500 staff at Departmental offices. EduMail is provided centrally via a connection to the VicSmart Wide Area Network (WAN) with home access available via the Internet.

In addition to the main e-mail service, users are able to self manage their accounts and modify details such as their name, title, contact details and school location. An EduMail Helpdesk has been established as part of the DEECD Service Desk and provides ongoing assistance to all EduMail account holders. The DEECD Service Desk operates between the hours of 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 1800 641 943. The Service Desk is also available during school holidays.

Expected Outcome

It is expected that the volume of messages transmitted via EduMail will increase over time as a result of the increase in routine use of EduMail by teachers. The EduMail system will increase access, equity, participation and choice providing access for all teachers outside of school boundaries and outside of school hours to an efficient email service.
