Children of School Age Attending a Kindergarten Program - School Exemption Process
A child attending kindergarten may be assessed by the early childhood teacher to be eligible for a second year of funded kindergarten.
If continued attendance in the kindergarten program is sought for this child, the Department of Human Services Declaration of eligibility for a second year of funded kindergarten form is completed by the early childhood teacher in consultation with the child’s parent/guardian.
In some cases the child will turn six years of age (compulsory school age) while attending the second year of funded kindergarten and the child must be exempted from attending school by the Department of Education (DoE).
The parents/guardians are responsible for seeking this exemption.
Parents/guardians should fill in the DoE Exemption from school due to attendance in kindergarten program form and attach a copy of the completed Declaration of Eligibility for a second year of funded kindergarten form. The declaration form will be provided to the parent/guardian by the early childhood service teacher.
This exemption request is to be forwarded to the Regional Director of the relevant DoE regional office for consideration, by 1 November in the year prior to the child turning six.
Once a decision has been made, the delegated DoE regional officer completes the bottom section of the DoE Exemption from school due to attendance in kindergarten program form, which identifies if the school exemption has been granted.
A copy of this form is then forwarded to the nominated parent/guardian, who is to organise the early childhood service provider to sight the DoE decision.
Please note that the nominated parent/guardian has the option to withdraw the school exemption request.
